If you're running a koi pond or a heavily stocked water garden, the filter is usually the piece that decides whether your water stays clear or turns into a losing battle. The Teton XKF Series is a pressure bead-style filter built around open laterals and semi-floating filter media, and it comes with a multi-port valve already included, so you're not sourcing that part separately. The biological media inside has enough surface area to support large fish loads, which matters once you're past a handful of koi and into a real collection.

Open Laterals and Semi-Floating Media, and Why the Design Matters

Laterals are the internal distribution arms that spread water evenly through the tank so the whole media bed gets used instead of just the middle of it. Open laterals specifically are less prone to clogging than the fully enclosed style, which keeps flow more consistent over time and cuts down on the flow restriction that shows up as your filter gets dirty.

The semi-floating media works with the multi-port valve during backwash. Instead of packing down into a dense mass that's hard to rinse, the media lifts slightly and tumbles, so waste releases more completely when you switch the valve over. Inside that media, beneficial bacteria colonize the surface area and convert fish waste, ammonia and nitrite, into far less harmful compounds through the nitrogen cycle. That biological stage is what keeps a heavily stocked pond stable between water changes.

Seven Sizes, One Family: XKF2500 Through XKF24000

The XKF line runs from a 2,500 gallon unit up to a 24,000 gallon unit, so there's a reasonable match whether you've got a small backyard water garden or a large koi show pond. Specs below are pulled directly from each model.

Model Tank Height Inlet/Outlet Max Flow Max Pond Size
XKF2500 16" 1½" 4,200 GPH 2,500 Gal
XKF4200 18" 1½" 4,800 GPH 4,200 Gal
XKF6500 20" 1½" 5,400 GPH 6,500 Gal
XKF9000 24" 2" 7,200 GPH 9,000 Gal
XKF12000 24" 2" 8,400 GPH 12,000 Gal
XKF16000 30" 2" 9,600 GPH 16,000 Gal
XKF24000 36" 2" 10,800 GPH 24,000 Gal

Top-Mount vs. Side-Mount Valve Position

The XKF2500 through XKF9000 use a top-mount valve, which keeps the plumbing footprint tighter and works well when you're tucking the filter into a smaller equipment area. The XKF12000 through XKF24000 switch to a side-mount valve, which is typical for larger tanks since it gives you easier access for backwashing and maintenance without needing extra headroom above the unit. Worth factoring into where you plan to place the filter before you dig or pour a pad for it.

Shipping and Freight Notes

The smaller models in this line ship standard, but the XKF9000 through XKF24000 are large enough that they can only go out via LTL motorized freight, and they don't qualify for free shipping. If you're ordering one of the larger sizes, plan for a freight delivery, which usually means a scheduled appointment rather than a driver just dropping it at the curb.

Documentation

A full instruction manual is available for the XKF Series covering setup, plumbing connections and initial backwash procedure, useful to have on hand before installation day rather than figuring it out as you go.
