How Nualgi Ponds Works In The Water

Dose the pond and a diatom bloom typically shows up within 3 to 5 hours. The diatoms compete with nuisance algae for carbon dioxide, nitrogen, phosphorus, and other nutrients, and they win that competition fast enough that the algae starts dying off. Some of those nutrients get locked into diatom biomass, which then becomes live food for fish and zooplankton instead of fuel for more algae. The oxygen the diatoms produce feeds your bacteria colony, which cleans up waste faster and helps knock down odor along with the green water.

Smaller bottles make sense if you're trying Nualgi on a small backyard pond for the first time. Larger bottles make more sense if you're running a bigger koi pond or dosing all season long.

How To Dose Nualgi Ponds

Know your pond's volume before you dose. That's the one step people skip, and it throws off everything after it. Nualgi Ponds is dosed at 1 ml per 1,000 gallons per week in ponds carrying algae, ideally applied early in the morning. For ponds under 5,000 gallons with decent flow, pour it straight into the skimmer, the waterfall, or another area with good circulation. In larger ponds, dilute the dose in a jar of pond water first and walk it around the perimeter so it spreads out evenly.

Heavier Algae Buildup

If algae covers about 20% of your pond, dose every 5 days instead of every 7 until coverage drops to around 10%. Once it's down to that level, go back to the standard weekly schedule.

Cold Weather Adjustments

Bacteria slow down as the water cools, and your dosing schedule should slow down with it.

If your pond freezes over, Nualgi Ponds won't do much until the water temperature climbs back above freezing.

One more thing worth knowing: turn off any UV clarifier or Iongen ionizer while you're dosing. Both will interfere with the diatom bloom you're trying to grow, so switch them back on only after the dosing window has passed.
